Slovakia Ukraine Border

Slovak Truckers Allow Limited Crossings from Ukraine

Border Blockage Cleared

Slovak truckers have allowed a limited number of lorries to cross the Slovak-Ukraine border, ending a blockade that had prevented vehicles from entering Slovakia since Tuesday.

Background

The blockade began when Slovak truckers demanded higher border crossing fees and improved working conditions. The hauliers' union distanced themselves from the protest, but the blockade continued, causing delays for goods and people crossing the border.

International Response

The international community expressed concern about the blockade, as it disrupted trade and humanitarian aid deliveries to Ukraine. The European Union and the United States urged Slovakia to resolve the situation quickly.

Resolution

After negotiations between the Slovak government and the hauliers' union, a compromise was reached. The government agreed to increase border crossing fees by a small amount and improve working conditions for truckers.

The remaining truckers who were still blockading the border agreed to disperse, allowing traffic to resume.
